OCT is another important addition in the armamentarium of the retinologist. This device takes cross-sectional optical scans of the retina, somewhat similar to a CT-scan except that instead of potentially harmful X-Rays used in a CT Scan, an OCT uses light to scan the retina.
The spectral domain OCT scans are high resolution images having a resolution of upto 5 microns, thus revealing even the minutest structural changes in the retinal tissue.
Spectral Domain OCT (Carl Zeiss, Germany)
Normal OCT
A Case of Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) showing fluid collection under Neurosensory Retina
ANOTHER CASE OF CSR HAVING UNDERLYING RETINAL PIGMENT EPITHELIUM (RPE) DETACHMENT (ARROW)
A Case of High Hypermetropia Showing Macular Fold (Arrow)

B. OCT Taken Through the Macular Fold
A Case of Blunt Ocular Trauma Showing Multiple Retinal and Subretinal Hemorrhages (white arrow) as well as Macular Edema (Berlin’s Edema)- black arrow
Retinal Edema (swelling) clearly appreciated in OCT scan through the macula of the same patient
